Problems and Precautions
Precautions
Trekking is for fun and adventure not to suffer. Problems may arise during trekking in High altitude and low lands of Terai. There are certain precautions that can highly minimize such problems. To make a trek hassle free necessary precaution mention below should strongly taken.
Problems:
Acute mountain Sickness
AMS is the main problem while trekking in high attitude above 3000 meters. AMS is caused due to the lack of oxygen. Head ache, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, dizziness, disturbed sleep are signs and symptoms of AMS. There are some clear- cut and important prevention that can be carried out.
What to Do?
Acclimatize or descend, Diamox
High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HAPE)
This is the extension of AMS if the trekker suffering from AMS continue to ascend despite of headache and vomiting. Severe headache, loss of balance/ coordination, irrational behavior, confusion, drowsiness, coma is some symptoms of HAPE.
What to Do?
Descend immediately, Diamox , Keep the body warm
High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)
This disease may follow AMS, but often it may appear independently. Low oxygen causes the pulmonary artery to narrow and this results in exudation of blood near the smaller branches of the lungs (the alveoli) ultimately resulting in HAPE. Breathless(even at rest), dry cough/ pink or rusty spit, blue lips/ nails, very tired, low fever, gurgling breadth, drowsy, coma
What to Do?
Descend immediately, Keep the body warm, nifedipine
Preventing altitude sickness
Ascend slowly:
Our itinerary is carefully design with ayears of experience. Guide Tika takes good care of altitude acclimatization and provide rapid response to symptoms.
Drink plenty liquids
Drinking plenty liquids in altitude provide oxygen to the body reducing risk of AMS. Liquid here refers to water not beer.
Avoiding alcohols and caffeine. Guide Tika recommend garlic soup instead of this items.
Other Problems:
Sprains and strains :
Sprains and strains are commonly seen accidents during trekking. Steep terrain and rough trails may cause many trekkers strain their knees and ankles. Some easy tips to avoid these accidents are stretching before start walking, avoid waking at nights , using bandages .
Beast Attack:
Trekking trails is also used by Donkeys, Mules and yaks .These beasts are main means of transportation in alpine region. Always stay on uphill side of these beasts.
Leeches:
Best way to get rid of them is using salt.
Hypothermia:
Low body temperature caused by prolonged exposure to cold starts with shivering, progressing to slurred speech, stumbling. It can be prevented simply by using warm clothes. In other case hot water bottle can be use to get back into normal.
Avalanches
Steep terrain and rough trails are the possible areas of avalanches. Walk quickly and quietly over avalanches hazard area. Receive updated information before you leave for trekking.
Food and Water:
Treated water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth. Our trekking route have safe drinking Water station to provide ozonated, safest and cheapest drinking water. We are environmentally aware and we strongly discourage use of plastic bottle water that is non- biodegradable.
Vaccinations
Nepal is developing country and there are still diseases like malaria and typhoid. There is no problem for trekkers in higher altitudes but traveling in lower land these may be the problem. We advice you to have vaccine against japanese B encephalitis, meningococcal meningitis, tuberculosis and hepatitis B.It is suggested to take further advice fromf your personal physician or a travel health clinic before traveling.
